I’ll start with the short answer: No.
As with anything else, it's more complicated than that.
The goals of the innovation process itself are mainly twofold:
When the innovation process is done properly (we call it “IP Capsule™” at Spark Israel), both goals are achieved simultaneously.
So, what does patent filing have to do with it?
In some cases where the innovation is sufficiently technical and “patentable,” the IP Capsule process continues with the formalization of the patent and its submission until it is issued.
Thus, patent submission is not the primary goal of the process but rather an additional layer of protection for the newly created intellectual property, feasible only when applicable.
What About Cases That Are Not Patentable?
The IP Capsule process follows the direction set during business sessions. During these sessions, ambitious business goals are drafted, and corresponding technology or operational goals are set. This holistic approach ensures the creation of a new and unexpected plan that reaches these business goals.
Technology and innovation are powerful tools to achieve ambitious goals, enabling businesses to leapfrog the competition and establish defenses for the new breakthrough business created.
In summary, while patent filing can be a valuable outcome of the innovation process, it is not the central objective.
The true essence of innovation lies in fostering creativity and achieving strategic business goals through novel solutions.
